UTEP is slow to respond to request for travel information El Paso Times

EL PASO -- UTEP sought nearly $1,000 in compensation after it received a public records request for school President Diana Natalicio's travel records from the El Paso Times.

Administrators at El Paso Community College and El Paso's medical school received similar requests for travel records. Both of those institutions supplied the information within the law's specified time frame without seeking any payment for the records.

Here is how the process unfolded:

The Times on Feb. 1 filed a request under the Texas Public Information Act asking for all costs associated with Natalicio's travel. The newspaper wanted details about airfare, meals and lodging. It also asked university record-keepers to specify the purpose of each trip, the destination and length of stay.

Ten days later -- the deadline for a response under the law -- UTEP mailed a letter to the Times seeking $936 for personnel costs and other "overhead charges" before the information could be released.
