Bill asks feds to stop blocking sex offender checks Toronto Sun
A pardoned sex offender potentially could be allowed to work or volunteer with children — an apparently inadvertent result of a new directive to the RCMP — Ontario Liberal MPP Liz Sandals says.
The Guelph MPP introduced a private member’s bill Thursday that asks the federal government to amend a policy that restricts access to complete criminal histories on the Canadian Police Information Consortium database.
The rule, imposed in December, says that only direct employers on an authorized list of organizations can perform “vulnerable persons” checks on employees.
This type of screening goes beyond a simple criminal background check to determine, for instance, if someone has received a pardon for a sex offence.
“Parents quite rightly assume ... that the proper criminal reference checks are taking place and that in particular — because that’s obviously the purpose of the exercise — to find out if the person is a sexual offender,” Sandals said. “But we’ve now got this catch-22 where there are a whole lot of people who actually interact with children on a very regular basis and there’s actually no legal way of getting at the sexual offender history.”
I have a interview with Guess Canada and need to fill out the application. I do have a criminal background check, and fear that if I say yes on the application my consideration would be nullified. I really need this job and really need to know if they actually follow through and do the full search.
